About our discipline
The Engineering Management discipline at The University of Melbourne delivers research and education that address critical challenges in the planning, delivery, and long-term management of large-scale infrastructure systems. Our work focuses on complex projects such as major transport corridors, rail and road networks, ports, water and wastewater systems, energy transmission assets, and large public infrastructure programs. Situated at the intersection of engineering, risk, economics, and organisational decision-making, the discipline develops integrated approaches that improve infrastructure performance, resilience, and sustainability, while supporting the transition to Net Zero infrastructure systems.
Adopting a holistic and systems-based perspective, our research and teaching address uncertainty, interdependency, and long-term value across the infrastructure life cycle from strategic planning and business case development to procurement, construction, operation, and asset renewal. We take a highly collaborative and industry-engaged approach, working closely with infrastructure owners, government agencies, industry partners, and international academic networks. Our research not only advances scholarly knowledge but also delivers practical frameworks, digital tools, and decision-support systems that enhance infrastructure productivity, strengthen risk governance, and support evidence-based pathways towards resilient, low-carbon, and Net Zero infrastructure.
